The meeting was chaired by Bob Roach. Minutes were taken by Sue Birkinshaw

  1. Apologies for absence
    Mike Atherton (LOC)
  2. Sports Marketing Network
Svend Elkjaer gave a presentation on making your club Vibrant, Visible and Viable. He gave the meeting many ideas on how to make your club grow, the main thrust being that you must be enterprising, customer-focused and open to change.
Club delegates will take the ideas back to their clubs for further consideration.
Bob Roach will circulate the clubs with ways in which we could proceed, so that a decision can be made at the next CDM.
Svend's powerpoint presentation is available on request from the NW Secretary.
  3. Using regular informal events to promote Orienteering
Roger Jackson gave his overview of the present state of BOF membership and participation. He stressed the value of regular (maybe weekly) informal events within easy reach of everybody. He described the WCOC model.
  4. A Business Plan for orienteering
Steve Round updated the meeting with results of the project to develop a business-oriented approach to marketing the sport with the help of a post-graduate student from Lancaster University Management School.
He then gave an outline of publicly available research data from Sport England that he and Jane Mockford had discovered while working on that project. It sets out the main factors that give a positive experience of sport and how these differ in importance in 19 different market segments identified across the adult population. He and Jane have looked at the distribution of these segments across the North West, showing that they often differ significantly between clubs so that ways of promoting our sport should be adapted appropriately if we are to target them effectively.

Steve's presentation is available using the link below. Both Jane and he are keen to work with any clubs interested in using this data further to see what could be gleaned from it.
  5. Brainstorming
Jane Mockford led a session in which all delegates picked out the ideas that the day's presentations had given them. These were combined to give a positive way forward and a summary is attached.
  6. Employment of a Project Leader
BOF Development Team have asked NW if there is a willingness to employ Hamish Willis for a year to cover a gap in funding.
It was agreed that we could do so, with each club being given 5 days of his time if they want it. The rest of the time available could be spent on a regional project.
NW Exec will meet with BOF to arrange how to implement this decision.
  7. Nominations to Events and Competitions Committee
The region is invited to nominate people to join this committee. Further information on what would be involved is available from Bob Roach.
