This year the junior squad again visited southern Norway for its bi-annual tour.
The North West Junior Squad exists to support Junior Orienteering in the North West Region.
Membership is by invitation to any promising and committed young people, aged from 12 to 18, who are members of one of the nine NWOA clubs.
In August a group of 29 juniors and 10 adults travelled out to Fredrikstad in southern Norway for the bi-annual junior squad tour.
Performance standard is required to be achieved in three events within the Calendar year.
This years Junior Inter Regional Competition was hosted by ScotJOS near Aberdeen.
The start of 2016 has seen the squad come together for a fitness day in January and a weekend in the Lakes in February.
This spring has seen NWJS members attend a variety of competitions with no little success.
Athletes in NWJS have been encouraged to attend their local weekend ParkRun to test their fitness levels. Keeping fit is progressive and the 2016 Squad Standards document encourages everyone to attend a ParkRun at least every 3 months.
Each year the North West Junior Squad runs an "Open Day" where we invite any North West Junior orienteer between 2nd year M/W12s and M/W18s to attend the training to be assessed to see if they are suitable standard to join the squad. The minimum standard is proficient on Orange courses and starting to run Light Green courses at 2nd year 12 and above.
The North West Junior Squad is formed 1st January each year. Athletes are judged on 3 measures throughout the year - Fitness, Attendance and Performance. An invitation to rejoin the squad is based on the Athletes achievements against these three measures in the preceding 12 months.
Congratulations to Niamh Hunter, Rosie Spencer & Daniel Spencer (all WCOC) and Finlay Johnson (SROC) for being selected to represent England in the Interland match at the end of February 2016.

Following an introductory day back in the summer a number of new athletes have been invited to join the squad.
The Junior Inter Regional Champs were hosted in the West Midlands on September 26th/27th.
